Died of Love (2009)

Amy LaVere

Died of Love finds Amy tracing around the darker edges of her lovelorn repertoire, but with a distinctive new sound honed on the road since the release of Anchors and Anvils.  Recorded as a three piece with her touring band, the EP immediately commands attention, as they race headlong through Amy’s arrangement of the traditional “Railroad Boy (Died of Love)” and Michelle Shocked’s “If Love Was a Train.” (CD ONLY)  Her dreamy take on the Tom Waits classic “Green Grass” is as evocative as the original itself, and when she revisits “Washing Machine” from Anchors, it courses with a whole new energy along with heavy bass, thundering guitar, and crashing cymbals. Finally, the EP also features an arrangement from guitarist Steve Selvidge on the traditional tune “Lazarus,” to which Selvidge lends his vocals.
